Current Issues in Science...
They're all around us. Some go noticed and some don't. The most important thing about issues in science (or the world, really, as most things are related to science in some way or another) is being able to comprehend the problem or understand what is going on in the world around you. So on this site there will be a mixture of things, some upbeat and lighthearted and others maybe not so much. Anything and everything that relates to science might find it's way onto this website! So sit back, enjoy what's on here, and hopefully you'll learn a thing or two!

Baby cured of the HIV virus?
March 7th-
A few days ago, news was released that it's possible that they cured a baby of her HIV virus. There are still doubts, as it is possible the virus is just lying dormant, but so far, only trace amounts of HIV genetic material seem to be left and none.

Sleeping Habits Off Schedule?
Your Electronic Devices May Be The Cause.
February 4th-
Researchers have discovered a correlation between a photoreceptor in the eye, called melanopsin, and blue light emitted from tablets, computers, and ipods. They have found that the photoreceptor could affect your sleep cycle. The melanopsin has an effect on how much melatonin the body produces, and when it is exposed to blue light, it suppresses the body's natural production of melatonin. A study showed that the use of an ipad two hours before sleeping "was enough to suppress people's normal nighttime release of melatonin." The average person's sleep schedule is delayed by an hour; if someone continues to do this for years, "it can lead to the disruption of the circadian cycle" ----sometimes with serious effects on a person's health.
If you are someone anxious to keep your circadian cycle on track, there is a download you can reach by clicking "f.lux download" below. This will take you to a webpage that explains all about f.lux and the effects of blue light on your sleep schedule. In a nutshell, the f.lux download will take where you currently live and based on when the sun goes down in your area, gradually change the lighting on your computer from blue light so that you can have your proper daily dose of melatonin on time. It's not going to shut your computer down or anything, but instead give your screen a reddish-orange glow at night. You get to set how orange you want your screen to be too, so it's not like you're looking at a bag of Sun Chips.
